Sustainability is at the forefront of the design process at Afends, with every range made from 100% sustainable fibres. Designing with people and the planet in mind means we are conscious of the entire process from seed to skin.

Design

There are three key areas that we review when considering sustainability in design:

Fabrication – We use 100% sustainable fibres to create every range.

Waste / Remnant Fabric – We are continually innovating processes to use our waste and remnant fabric. This includes our introduction of scrunchies to our womens range. The scrunchies are sustainably made using the fabric offcuts leftover from our main range.

Longevity – Afends designs are made to be durable and timeless. Hemp wears in not out/style of garments remain on-trend/Made with premium quality materials to be a long-wearing staple.

The selection of raw materials is vital when looking at sustainability in fashion. Every material has an impact on the environment, but the difference between them can be drastic. Ensuring that we are making educated and conscious decisions when selecting the appropriate fabrics for our garments is imperative in our journey to sustainability.

Certifications

Certifications

At Afends we understand the importance of meaning what we say. We therefore understand the importance of certifications around the materials that we use, and the suppliers that we use.

Certifications ensure that appropriate standards relating to quality, environmental management, sustainability, social responsibility and ethical standards are upheld.
We have made it our mission to acquire the necessary certifications to ensure that our sustainability focus is verified through our supply chain. We currently have the following certifications as a business and are working on educating our suppliers to become involved in the process so that the products we source from them can display these certifications.

GOTS

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. It covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, trading and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibres. The textiles must meet a certain set of environmental standards and social criteria in accordance with the International Labour Organisation.

SCOPE CERTIFICATE

OCS 100

OCS 100 verifies that a product is made from between 95-100% organic material. The Organic Content Standard (OCS) certification verifies that a product has met organic standards throughout its journey from raw material to finished product. The aim of the standard is to ensure trust in organic content claims. OCS allows for transparent, consistent, and independent evaluation and verification of Organic Material Content claims by an accredited third-party Certification Body (CB).

SCOPE CERTIFICATE

OCS Blended

OCS Blended verifies that a product is made from between 5-95% organic material. The Organic Content Standard (OCS) certification verifies that a product has met organic standards throughout its journey from raw material to finished product. The aim of the standard is to ensure trust in organic content claims. OCS allows for transparent, consistent, and independent evaluation and verification of Organic Material Content claims by an accredited third-party Certification Body (CB).

Packaging

Packaging

Our packaging is 100% recyclable or compostable contributing to our zero waste initiative.

Corn Starch Bags - Our garments are packed in cornstarch garment bags made from renewable and sustainable plant materials as well as non-toxic compostable resin making them 100% home compostable. In turn, anything you order from us will be delivered in custom cornstarch courier satchel bags. Both bags can simply be popped into the green compostable bin, but we recommend adding them to your home compost to feed the worms, or use as your compostable bin bag before it goes into the green bin.

Swing Tags - Our product swings tags are made from 100% recycled card.

Transportation

Transportation

Net zero carbon is a goal at Afends so, we have begun by proactively addressing the CO2 footprint of our production import freight services performed by our logistics suppliers including airlines, shipping lines and haulage companies.

In this exciting first step, all our inbound production shipments are now carbon neutral.

Working with our partner, our import logistics net zero carbon program leverages three fields of action: detection, reduction and compensation of CO2. We select services based on CO2 efficiency ratings to minimise emissions and through our partner who has started its own nature projects in Myanmar and New Zealand and invested in various nature-based CO2 compensation projects, we use emission credits, which are obtained in accordance with the highest international standards to provide a Net Zero impact.

Consumer Use

Consumer Use

Once the garments leave our warehouse, the environmental impact does not end. Educating our customers will help us lessen this environmental impact after the purchase of our product. The way the clothes are used and treated significantly affects their lifespan and the amount of waste they create.

Garments that are frequently washed have the highest environmental impact. Our Goal is to reduce waste and increase the lifespan of garments once they have been purchased.

Re-Use & Recycle.
We know that you may not hold onto your Afends clothing forever, but what you do when you’re finished with it can make a huge impact on the garments environmental impact. The worst scenario, and unfortunately the most common, is that they end up in landfill and aggravate the current issues with waste and the environment. That’s why we want to promote reusing and recycling your clothing.

Instead of chucking your clothes out, give them to a mate, donate them to charity or make some coin by having a garage sale. Every piece of clothing has its toll on the environment so let’s try and keep them circulating for as long as we can.
