We collaborated with Sydney-based designer Lois Morton Chong for the latest edition of Create Not Destroy [VOL. 13] to bring you a collection of monogram prints, graphic tees and vibrant pops of colour.
Lois takes much of her inspiration from the fonts of faded newspaper ads & xeroxed band posters whilst adding a modern edge to her work. Lois' desire to rebel against what she learned in design school removes the often restrictive graphic design rules from the narrative. Her design elements embrace chaos and focus on the contrast between deconstruction and reconstruction. This style translates into a vibrant collection of monogram prints, ribbed sets and plenty of graphic tees. We caught up with Lois to chat about the inspiration behind her capsule.
My name is Lois, I'm a freelance graphic designer and I live in Sydney.
What makes me feel inspired is probably my friends. I think being surrounded by creative people has definitely helped me when it comes to my work, and my style.
My favourite thing to do on my day off would be surfing.
The concept behind my capsule is based on the theme detox. When we decide to detox, we pull ourselves away from society - like a caterpillar does when it goes back into its cocoon. We have a bit of time to do the things that will benefit ourselves, and we transform freer and recharged, like a moth.
The highlight of working on this project was probably seeing my artwork printed on a range of clothing that is sustainable.
